I am really excited to let you know that I just wrote a book on dolphins called “Dolphins: A Kids’ Book of Cool Pictures and Amazing Facts About Dolphins” that is available now on Amazon in paperback and Kindle!

I included a few different species of dolphins in the book. They are fascinating animals, especially for someone like me who grew up in the Midwest and only saw the oceans on vacation. And for my friends who live on the Coast, they just loved this book for their kids. I’m so happy to have it availble for everyone to enjoy!

Instructions for a Happier LIfe

Hello My Friend!

Some things that are sure to make you live a better life.
I found a really neat list of “Instructions for Life” that I wanted to pass on to you. And yes, I know these don’t have to do with reading to your children, but it’s something that I had up in my classroom when I was teaching and I think you might enjoy this as well.

They are great little things that we all do when we think about it. Things that make our lives and the lives of everyone around us a little bit better. For me, they serve as a reminder more than anything.

Instructions for Life:
1. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
2. When you say, “I’m sorry”, look the person in the eye.
3. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt, but it’s the only way to live life completely.
4. In disagreements, fight fair.
5. Don’t judge people by their relatives.
6. Talk slowly, but think quickly.
7. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
8. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
9. Smile when picking up the phone. the caller will hear it in your voice.
10. Spend some time alone.

11. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.
12. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
13. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll get to enjoy it a second time.
14. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.
15. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a stroke of luck.
16. Learn the rules, then break some.
17. Read more books and watch less TV.
18. A loving atmosphere in your home is so important. Do all you can to create a tranquil and harmonious home.
19. Read between the lines.
20. Never interrupt someone when you are being flattered.

When I was growing up, my mom always read to us and I think
that’s a HUGE reason I’ve remained so curious and have enjoyed reading so much
as an adult.

So, I took a look at the research on the benefits of reading
to your children. Found some great stuff, and here’s an article I’d like to share with you.

Preschool children who have had someone read to them do
better in school when they get there.

Many studies show that students who love learning and do
well in school have parents who read to them.

If you follow along with your finger as you read to your
baby, your child will learn that words represent sounds and concepts and that words
are read from left to write.

Reading to your child results in a longer attention span,
which is an important skill for success.

It builds listening skills and imagination.

Books teach your child thinking skills early on. When you read
to your children, they learn to understand cause and effect. They are also
exposed to logic and thinking in abstract terms.

Books also teach the consequences of actions, and the basics
of what is right and wrong.

When you read together as a family, your child learns early
that reading is fun. When your child grows up, you will not be stressed about
getting him to read because reading will be a pleasurable habit.
